JOHOR BAHRU, Feb 27 -- Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) Malaysian Institute of Industrial Technology (MITEC) has developed an Integrated Downstream Simulation Plant worth RM7.1 million at its campus in Masai that will begin operations in the middle of this year.
Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the facility aims to train more highly skilled personnel in the operation, maintenance and safety field of the oil and gas industry.
“We expose students to a real-world facility in the petroleum processing industry to increase their skill level in line with industrial needs.
“Although it is a simulation unit, this facility is capable of operating like a real operation in the petroleum processing industry,” he said in a statement today after visiting UniKL MITEC in Masai, Pasir Gudang here today.
The facility has three complete main units, the Steam Powered Mini-Plant Unit, the Crude Oil Distillation Simulation Unit and the pioneer Hydrotreater Plant Training Unit, he said.
He added that the facility meets real petroleum processing industry standards and is equipped with safety, fire and gas leak detection systems, which is one of the main topics in the course syllabus at UniKL MITEC.
Mahdzir said the facility is capable of separating two mixed liquid substances using its Crude Oil Distillation Simulation Unit and separating mixed liquid and gas using its pioneer Hydrotreater Plant Training Unit.
“This facility also allows UniKL MITEC students to be accredited with industry competency certification, including Vibration Analyst Level One issued by the Mobius Institute in Australia and plant operation training together with the Institute of Technology Petronas (INSTEP).
“The facility will enable UniKL MITEC students to be relevant to the industry and provide secure job opportunities not only domestically but globally,” he said.
UniKL MITEC is an education institute under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) that has recorded an average student marketability rate of 97.7 per cent in 2020 based on the Graduate Tracing Study.
