KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 -- Newly minted national women’s badminton doubles coach Lee Meng Yean believes she can produce world beaters among the current crop of national players.
Meng Yean said her experience of playing at the highest levels of the sport would come in handy in her new job.
Expressing her happiness at rejoining the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), the 2020 Uber Cup captain said her immediate task was to improve the mental and physical state of her charges.
“I will share my exprience and help the women’s doubles pairs get good results and become champions. I can certainly help in the mental and physical aspects as I played in all big tournaments before,” she said in an audio clip shared to Bernama today.
Based on the Badminton World Federation rankings, Meng Yean and her former partner Chow Mei Kuan, who won bronze in the 2019 SEA Games, are still the country’s top-ranked pair, standing at 11th in the world.
Mei Kuan retired shortly after they were knocked out of the group stage of the Tokyo Olympics, while Meng Yean quit the national team at the end of last month, after trying out her partnerships with several junior players.
Apart from Meng Yean, BAM, in a statement yesterday, also announced the appointment of National Sports Institute senior physiologist Dr Tim Jones as the high-performance director at the association.
