Mohd Kamal Hassan appointed IKIM chairman

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 -- The former rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM) Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Mohd Kamal Hassan has been appointed chairman of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) effective today.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Datuk Idris Ahmad said Mohd Kamal is an Islamic thinker who had made great contributions to academia, research, education and human capital development.

"I am pleased to say that the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob) has agreed to the appointment of Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Kamal Hassan as IKIM chairman and Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz as deputy chairman,” Idris said in a statement here today.

Mohd Kamal, 79, who was born in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, holds a Bachelor of Islamic Studies from the University of Malaya in 1965 before obtaining a Masters and Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University, New York in 1975.

Mohd Kamal was rector of IIUM from 1999 to 2006 and also served as the chairman of the Islamic Religious Education Coordination and Advisory Board (LEPAI), a board established with the consent of the Conference of Rulers, and was named senior professor for his contribution in the academic world.
