KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 -- The back of a building under construction near Jalan Tasik Permaisuri, Bandar Tun Razak near here was damaged in a fire after several welding gas cylinders placed there exploded.

A Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they received a distress call about the incident at 2.17 pm and dispatched a team to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the team confirmed a fire had occurred involving two acetylene gas cylinders here.  The fire, which damaged up to 70 per cent of the storage area, was brought under control at 2.30 pm and no casualties were reported,” he said, adding that the cause of the fire was still being investigated.

Meanwhile, a security guard at the building said that he was at the building’s lobby when he heard a loud explosion and went to check on what happened.

“The explosion was followed by thick smoke that filled the back area where the welding gas cylinders were placed,” he said.
