Perlis PBS units often first at scene to assist firefighters

KANGAR, Feb 16 -- Perlis Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) units are often the first to be at the scene in emergencies such as fires to help victims before the arrival of firefighters.

The PBS is made up of dedicated volunteers who come from all walks of life, such as traders, mechanics and farmers.

Perlis Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Senior Fire Superintendent 1 Ruhisha Haris said he was personally impressed with their determination, discipline and commitment in assisting firefighters at the scene.

"So far, Perlis has 10 PBS units comprising 200 active members, in Padang Besar, Lubuk Sireh, Pauh and Kaki Bukit,” he told Bernama here recently.

Ruhisha said almost all the PBS units were provided with machinery and equipment as well as training to ensure that they had the skills and ability to assist firemen.

He added the tasks of PBS members were limited as they are only required to perform less risky activities such as spraying water outside the building and mopping up after the firefighting operations.

Ruhisha said the welfare of PBS members are also covered under group insurance and that they were eligible to receive the same benefits as firefighters if they are involved in a mishap while on rescue duty.

"In addition, JBPM also provides RM3,000 grant a year to the PBS units for machinery maintenance,” he added.

Meanwhile, PBS Padang Besar chairman, Loo Heng Sang said the Perlis  PBS was established 30 years ago due to the awareness of the local communities to prevent fires and to play a vital role in assisting firemen during emergencies.
