SUNGAI PETANI, Feb 12 -- Jerai Geopark located in Kuala Muda and Yan districts is targeted to become a world-class geopark and recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) by 2025.

Jerai Geopark manager Mohd Amin Ali said so far, only one geopark in the country had been recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, namely Langkawi, while Mount Kinabalu, Sabah was in the process of obtaining the recognition.

“Jerai Geopark was declared as a National Geopark in 2017, it would be such a proud achievement if Jerai Geopark can also be raised to a higher level,“ he told reporters when met at the Sungai Merbok Kayaking Exploration Programme@Jerai Geopark here today.

He said the Sungai Petani Municipal Council and Yan District Council had been tasked to preserve the status of Jerai Geopark.

"We have managed to maintain the status of the National Geopark for another four years," he said.

Mohd Amin said various efforts with the support of the state government were being implemented, including setting up a permanent Jerai Geopark management unit equipped with a research team to identify areas with outstanding universal value (OUV).
