BANGI, Jan 29 -- The Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) has partnered with the Association of Texas Universities Alumni (PAUT) to achieve the country's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda towards carbon neutral by 2050.

This collaboration will also support the objectives of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) on sustainability in five of the 17 SDGs.

The five SDGs in focus are sustainable agriculture; renewable energy; responsible consumption and production; take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; and protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.

MGTC chief executive officer, Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor, said the intention outlined was to promote a sustainable lifestyle to maintain the sustainability of the environment, so that future generations can enjoy a more secure environment.

“MGTC welcomes PAUT's determination to work together to achieve the National Sustainable Development Goals towards a net zero emission nation by 2050,” he said at the signing of the memorandum of cooperation (MoC) between MGTC and PAUT, here today.

He said that MGTC was PAUT's latest collaborative partner in upholding responsibility towards a sustainable future, in line with the SDGs.

MGTC is an agency under the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) in driving the country towards green growth, climate change mitigation, and cultivating a green lifestyle.

MGTC has been implementing several initiatives and programmes in achieving a long-term impact on Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) with aims, among others, to achieve 45 per cent carbon reduction by 2030, and to increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from green technology by RM100 billion, generating 230,000 green jobs.

Apart from the signing of the MoC, PAUT also held its 10th anniversary dinner, themed  'Menerajui Masa Depan Lestari' (leading a sustainable future) today.

PAUT is a non-governmental organisation registered in 2017, and comprised of alumni from 16 universities from Texas, USA. Its activities revolve around contributions to the community and the world as a whole, which have been carried out unofficially since its inception in 1998.
