Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia visits Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28  -- Singapore's High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon today paid a visit to the Malaysian National News Agency’s (Bernama) headquarters, here.

He met with Bernama’s chairman Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi and Deputy Editor-in-Chief (International News Services) Jamaluddin Muhammad with both sides sharing matters of mutual interest.

Vanu, a senior diplomat, noted that the high commission has been working closely with Malaysian media, particularly Bernama, which he regards as a very important part of the Malaysian media infrastructure.

On Malaysian media coverage about issues related to Singapore, he said generally, the reports were factual especially by the English and Malay mainstream newspapers.

“They just report facts and sometimes there were analysts giving their views on separate issues. That's what the media job is, to report as well as sometimes give your own analysis of issues.

“Where we find the analysis to be not in line with our own thinking, we do sometimes write back to the relevant media organisation to explain our position a bit more clearly, and request that it be published in their papers which we've done on a couple of occasions,” he said.

The veteran diplomat also extended his Chinese New Year greetings to the Chinese community in Malaysia, hoping that the year of tiger will turn out to be a good year for the country.

The visit to Bernama today is the second one for Vanu, after the first visit more than four years ago.
