KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 -- The Malaysian Deaf Sports Association (MSDeaf) is targeting to bring home a gold medal from the Deaflympic Games in Caxias Do Sul, Brazil, which will takes place this May.
Its president Ong Shin Ruenn said the medal target for the Games scheduled from May 1 to 15 was based on the capability of Boon Wei Ying who won bronze in badminton women's singles at the 2019 Deaflympics.
"We will be represented by 24 athletes in five sports, namely bowling, badminton, karate, athletics and mountain bike racing," he said at a press conference after receiving sponsorship worth RM243,700 from Yakult Malaysia here today.
On the contribution, Ong said it would be used for sports development programmes for persons with disabilities, including in preparing for the Deaflympics and the Asia-Pacific Deaf Football Qualifiers in Jeju, Korea, this October.
He said MSDeaf would also organise leadership courses for its affiliate members nationwide.
Meanwhile, Yakult Malaysia managing dIrector Hiroshi Hamada said his company managed to raise RM315,000 through the organisation of the Yakult charity football match at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras on Dec 11.
He said that his company hoped that such a programme (the match) could be continued and made an annual event in helping those in need.
