Bernama to improve news content to make it more interesting

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 24  -- The Malaysian Nasional News Agency (Bernama) will improve its content to make it more interesting so as to further enhance the dissemination of news by using new social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Its newly-appointed Editor-in-Chief Khairdzir Md Yunus said Bernama as the country’s sole news agency responsible for providing news to local and foreign media organisations, should adopt and be in line with the latest technological developments.

“Old or traditional journalism or media organisation may not be so suitable now and need some adjustments according to the current trend.

“The shift to the use of smartphones and gadgets has resulted in less and less interest in reading printed newspapers. In fact, many media organisations had also shifted to online media.

“There are some social media platforms, such as TikTok which has been very popular among the young people, that we have yet to fully explore to disseminate our news in a more interesting way,” he said.

At the same time, he said Bernama will also enhance and improve its infographic and video services as it is more popular among the readers because it is simpler and easier to understand.

“Today’s media is more into the world of technology and the readers want the news to be presented interactively, with two-way communication between the news provider and the readers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khairdzir described his appointment as a huge challenge and heavy responsibility to take Bernama to greater heights.

“As the Editor-in-Chief, I have to make sure that we always function and play our roles in accordance with Bernama Act 1967, but with new strategies to increase its capabilities and productivity,” he said.

Khairdzir, who has been with Bernama for 36 years, was appointed as the news agency’s new Editor-in-Chief to replace Abdul Rahman Ahmad who completed his contract of service earlier this month following his mandatory retirement a year ago.

Khairdzir’s appointment, which took effect today, was announced by Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mokhtar Hussain.
