KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 -- Selangor FC today officially signed up goalkeeper Samuel Somerville from Penang FC for the 2022 Malaysia League (M-League) season.
Samuel, or fondly known as Sam, said Selangor’s status as a major force in the local league was the main reason why he chose to join the Red Giants.
“When you talk about football in Malaysia, I feel that Selangor are among the first names that will crop up.
“So, I understand the significance of playing for them. I know Selangor have lofty ambitions to achieve success next season and so do I. We both want to be successful together,” he said in a statement issued by Selangor today.
The 27-year-old Samuel, who is of mixed parentage, also urged Selangor fans to continue supporting the team through thick and thin next season.
Samuel, who hails from Farnborough, England, started his M-League career with Johor Darul Ta’zim II in in 2016 as a 21-year-old.
He began to attract the attention of football fans when he played a key role in helping Penang emerge Premier League champions in 2020 and qualify for the Super League.
Samuel earned his first national team call-up with the Harimau Malaya in May 2021 following a string of impressive performances for Penang in this season’s Super League campaign.
