Residential building wiring system must comply with Electricity Supply Act - Energy Commission

KOTA KINABALU, Dec 16 -- The installation of wiring systems for residential buildings must adhere to the Electricity Supply Act 1990 (Act 447) and the Electricity Regulations as well as according to the technical standards set by the Energy Commission (ST), said Sabah West Coast ST area director Jefrey Nuri.

He said this is a serious matter as there is a very risk of life-threatening accidents if the wiring installation does not conform to the set specifications. 

"ST always endeavours to raise public awareness to the dangers of illegal wiring installation through corporate social responsibility programmes by carrying out improvement works, apart from the installation of wiring systems for premises that do not have electricity supply.

"The work to improve and install the wiring system, implemented since November, is done by staff and electrical contractors registered with ST," he said in the Touchpoint ST programme in Karambunai, near here, today.

Jefrey said works to improve the wiring system, among others include replacing residual current device (RCD) on the distribution board which was found not meeting the standards set by ST which could save users from the risk of electric shocks when there was a current leak or short circuit.

"Before restarting the main switch on the distribution board, make sure the wiring and house earthing switch are inspected, repaired, and tested by an electrical contractor and certified safe by an electrical wireman registered with ST," he added.
