KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 -- Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has introduced a number of strategy blueprints and master plans to develop a carbon-neutral Kuala Lumpur by 2050.
Kuala Lumpur mayor, Datuk Mahadi Che Ngah said the Kuala Lumpur Climate Action Plan 2050 (KL CAP 2050) has become the next step of the climate-changing journey of DBKL.
“Solar panels are installed on all public buildings and infrastructure to promote the use of greener sources of energy and with that, rainwater harvesting systems are ensured in all new developments.
“Another important initiative that we are currently spearheading is the improvement of solid waste management in the city. The efforts include introducing the 1Community 1Recycling initiative to the residents of our People’s Housing Projects (PPR).
“DBKL is also promoting active mobility through ‘KL Car Free Morning’, which encourages a low-carbon lifestyle through the use of non-motorised modes of transport such as cycling and walking,” he said today at the virtual expo on city planning and development in Malaysia, City Expo Malaysia 2021 (CEM).
Presenting the slide entitled, ‘100 Years of Kuala Lumpur’s Sustainability Journey & Challenges’, Mahadi among others said that in furthering the climate action journey, DBKL had launched the Zero Carbon Growth Zone project in Wangsa Maju.
“The aim of this project is to develop a zero-carbon township that encompasses the concept of ‘15-Minute City’, which will provide residents with access to daily necessities that are within a 15-minute walk or bike ride,” he added.
Mahadi also said that beyond community involvement, DBKL had partnered with both local and international entities to make Kuala Lumpur a truly ‘Carbon-Neutral City and Smart City’, in line with SDG 17.
“We are honoured to have also collaborated with esteemed international partners such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies and Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan.
“In line with City Expo Malaysia 2021’s theme of ‘100 Years Advancing Our Cities’, the hope is that we will not only celebrate our achievements but continue to collectively seek out solutions.
“Together, let us create a better Kuala Lumpur, one that is more resilient, sustainable and livable for all,” he said.
