15/11/2021 10:52 AM

LONDON, Nov 15 -- Three people have been arrested after a car exploded outside a hospital in the northern English city of Liverpool on Sunday, leaving one person dead and another one injured, police said.

Earlier in the day, the Merseyside police said a car exploded near the Women's Hospital in Liverpool. An investigation is underway, with counter-terrorism detectives being involved, reported Sputnik.

"Officers in Merseyside have arrested three men - aged 29, 26 and 21 - in the #Kensington area of #Liverpool under the Terrorism Act," the Greater Manchester police tweeted.

The investigation is said to be continuing apace with the counter-terrorism police working closely with their Merseyside colleagues.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the car explosion as an "awful incident".

"My thoughts are with all those affected by the awful incident in Liverpool today. I want to thank the emergency services for their quick response and professionalism, and the police for their ongoing work on the investigation," Johnson tweeted.
