KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 -- Malaysian women’s doubles pair Anna Ching Yik Cheong-Teoh Mei Xing clinched their maiden international series title by winning the Czech Open today.
The pair, who are playing together in their first tournament, did well to upstage Indonesians Febby Valencia Dwijayanti Gani-Jesita Putri Miantoro 21-15, 16-21, 21-17 in the final at the Vodova Hall in Brno.
Anna-Mei Xing had advanced to the final by outclassing Russians Anastasiia Boiarun-Alena Iakovleva 21-5, 21-14 in the last four.
Anna, 23, was previously paired with Yap Cheng Wen and they emerged runners-up at the 2021 Austrian Open, while Mei Xing, 24, partnered Yap Ling until the recent Uber Cup.
It was an underwhelming night for Malaysian shuttlers at the Czech Open. Despite having representatives in four finals - men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles and women's doubles - only Anna-Mei Xing prevailed.
In men’s singles, Ng Tze Yong, who was a revelation at the recent Thomas Cup in Aarhus, came up short after an intense one-hour and 24-minute title showdown against homester Jan Louda.
The 21-year-old Tze Yong, who won the Polish Open in March, went down fighting 21-16 16-21, 25-27.
In women’s singles, Siti Nurshuhaini Azman’s campaign ended in similar fashion after the 17-year-old lost 16-21, 5-21 to Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia.
Man Wei Chong-Kai Wun Tee, the 2021 Spain International Challenge champions, were next to suffer a setback when they lost 21-13, 15-21, 15-21 to Singapore’s Hee Yong Kai Terry-Loh Kean Hean in the men's doubles final.
