BERNAS HAS CAPABILITY, EXPERIENCE IN MANAGING NATIONAL RICE SUPPLY

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- The appointment of Padiberas Nasional (Bernas) as the sole rice importer was based on the company's ability, expertise and experience in the development of the country's rice and paddy industry for almost 30 years.

Deputy Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Hamzah said Bernas also had extensive relationships with rice suppliers.

“For example, when we first faced COVID-19, at that time many rice-producing countries, especially Thailand and Vietnam, had stopped their supply. So, the government has to take action to instruct Bernas to buy the rice at any price because the company has the ability to do so,” he said.

He was replying to a question from Datuk Salim Sharif (BN-Jempol) and Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru) who raised the issue of Bernas monopoly while winding up the debate on the motion of thanks for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s royal address, in the Dewan Rakyat here today.

The government has agreed to extend the Bernas concession for the distribution of rice in the country for another 10 years from Jan 11, 2021, to Jan 10, 2031, to protect strategic commodities, especially rice as a staple food for Malaysians.
