JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 14 -- Kuching City FC stayed on the right track to qualify for the 2021 Malaysia Cup competition after defeating the FAM-NSC Project Squad 2-0 in a Premier League clash today.
‘The Cats’ opened the scoring at the Pasir Gudang City Council Stadium in the 13th minute through skipper Joseph Kalang Tie.
Joseph then turned provider in the 48th minute, sending in a perfect cross for Nigerian import Michael Ijezie to slot home.
The result sees Kuching City FC overtake Kelantan FC to occupy seventh spot in the standings with 24 points from 17 matches. The FAM-NSC Project Squad stay rooted at the bottom of the 11-team standings with just six points.
Coach Irfan Bakti Abu Salim’s Kuching City FC now need just three points from their remaining three matches to qualify for the Malaysia Cup as feeder clubs Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) II, who are third in the standings, Terengganu FC 2, who are fourth, and Selangor FC 2, who are sixth, will not be eligible to compete in the prestigious tournament.
Only the top five teams from the Premier League (excluding the feeder clubs) will qualify for the 2021 Malaysia Cup competition.
