KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 -- Currently in sixth position with four more matches to go, Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC midfielder Paulo Josue admitted that this Super League season has been the best for the team so far.
Although he has seen KL City FC emerge as Premier League champions in 2017 and been with them in two consecutive Super League seasons, Josue said this was the first time he had seen such stability in the team’s performance.
He said the presence of many quality players this season has helped the team, in addition to the solid defence that has been the foundation behind their successful league run, especially during home games.
“This season, I can say that the management has been wiser in the search of players and has even gotten a coach (Bojan Hodak) with so much experience in the Malaysia League (M-League),” he said in a Malaysia Football League (MFL) statement today.
According to Josue, Hodak also knew a lot about players in other teams as well as team strategies and that has provided the team with an added advantage.
Josue, who has gone through various ups and downs with KL City FC in his five seasons here, also said this year’s competition was the best seasons he has had with his teammates.
Kuala Lumpur’s best achievement in the Super League, which began in 2004, before they were rebranded to KL City FC was ninth in the 2010 season.
Josue is currently KL City FC’s top scorer and joint-third in the Super League, tied with Kedah Darul Aman (KDA) striker FC Kpah Sherman with nine goals, and four assists.
He could also be considered a free kick specialist in the M-League this season as he has scored a large number of his goals that way.
Josue said he did not feel burdened with goal-scoring expectations placed on him after KL City FC lost the services of Nigerian striker, Kyrian Nwabueze, after he suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.
“Romel Morales and I play more upfront, although both of us aren’t strikers, we try our best to help the team.
“Our teammates also chip in, including J Partiban, Hadin Azman and Zhafri. In fact, Bojan gives us the freedom to improvise when we have an opportunity to attack,” he added.
