5.6-magnitude quake hits Kermadec Islands, New Zealand

HONG KONG, Aug 2  -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 jolted Kermadec Islands, New Zealand at 01:27:36 GMT (1.27 pm local time) on Monday, the United States Geological Survey said.

The epicentre, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 30.4171 degrees south latitude and 177.8163 degrees west longitude, reported Xinhua News Agency.

Earlier, New Zealand's GeoNet reported that a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit the Waikato region in the central part of the North Island of New Zealand around 1:30 am.

A few hours later another weaker quake occurred.
