26/07/2021 10:00 PM

KUANTAN, July 26 -- The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) seized 31,480 kilogrammes (kg) of white oak wood from Germany worth RM96,055.21 at Kuantan Port, here, yesterday.

In a media statement today, MAQIS said the seizure was made following a routine inspection at 3.15 pm and the wood was believed to have been brought in by a local company for the country's market.

"The wood was detained for further action for not complying with MAQIS's import regulation by not stating the (type of) treatment in the phytosanitary certificate as stated in the permit, licence and certificate," it said.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 15 (1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 (Act 728). The offence is punishable under Section 15 (2) of the same act which is a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to six years or both, if convicted for the first time.
