KUCHING, July 5 -- The Kapit Division and Telang Usan district in Miri Division have been declared as African Swine Fever (ASF) disease control areas.
Sarawak Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) director Dr Adrian Susin Ambud said State Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas made the declaration today in view of news reports of suspected ASF outbreaks in the provinces of Nunukan and Krayan in Indonesia’s Kalimantan Utara, which are close to Kapit and Telang Usan.
“The public, including pig farmers in these areas (Kapit and Telang Usan) are hereby advised to refrain from feeding table scrap/swill feeding the pigs; moving live pigs, pork or pork products out and into these areas; and bringing/purchasing any pork or pork products into and out from these areas,” he said in a statement.
Pig farmers in other divisions were also advised to step up their vigilance by tightening their farm biosecurity and discourage visitors to their farms, besides reporting any abnormal mortality to the nearest veterinary office or via WhatsApp at 016-2840918.
“Bringing in pork or pork products (to Sarawak) without a permit from the State Veterinary Authority is an offence under Section 9(1) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999 (which provides) a penalty of fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding two years or both upon conviction,” he added.
