21/05/2021 12:35 PM

WASHINGTON, May 21 -- The United States will provide rapid humanitarian aid and reconstruction assistance to the Palestinians in Gaza, President Joe Biden announced hailing the ceasefire ending 11 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas, reported Sputnik.

“We remain committed working with the United Nations and other international stakeholders to provide rapid humanitarian assistance and marshal international support for the people of Gaza and the Gaza reconstruction efforts,” Biden said in a televised address.

The US president vowed to coordinate assistance with the internationally recognised Palestinian Authority and not the Hamas de facto administration in Gaza.

Israel and the Palestinian militants agreed to a mutual, unconditional ceasefire which was brokered by Egypt and began at 23.00 GMT on Thursday after 11 days of rocket attacks and air strikes.

Meanwhile, European Council President Charles Michel also welcomed the ceasefire.

“Welcome announced ceasefire between Israel and Hamas ending the 11-day conflict.Opportunity for peace and security for citizens must be seized," Michel wrote on his Twitter page late Thursday.
