MIROS, MARII LAUNCHING 5-STAR MOTORCYCLE SAFETY RATING PROGRAMME

16/03/2021 05:46 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 -- The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) will be launching the Malaysia Motorcycle Assessment Programme (MyMAP) for motorcycles made in Malaysia at the end of this month.

MIROS Vehicle Safety and Biomechanics Research Centre director, Zulhaidi Mohd Jawi, said the five-star rating system is a starting point for improving motorcycle safety technologically.

He said it was also in line with the National Automotive Policy 2020 (NAP 2020) and a realisation of the National Automotive Vision (NAV).

“MyMAP was created based on MIROS’s experience developing ASEAN NCAP (the New Car Assessment Programme for Southeast Asia), which evolved from the Malaysian Vehicle Assessment Programme (MyVAP).

“The ASEAN NCAP has increased consumer awareness and promoted safer passenger vehicles in the region,” Zulhaidi said in a statement today.

He said MyMAP has four criteria or components: compliance with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) regulations, conformity of production (COP), safety technology and a support programme.

He said safety technology for the breaking system is emphasised.

“The programme will initially be voluntary and for 250cc and below motorcycles. More details will be announced at the launch,” Zulhaidi said.

He said that several popular motorcycle models in Malaysia had undergone simulation testing and received a five-star rating.

“This proves that manufacturers can provide consumers with better options in terms of safety.”

MARii chief executive officer, Datuk Madani Sahari, said that prior to launching the programme, MIROS and MARii held talks with, and received positive feedback from, motorcycle manufacturers.

In January, MIROS and MARii signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work together.

The statement added that all motorcycle manufacturers in the country are invited to join the programme and lend their support in order to make vehicles safer.
