KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 -- Despite disruption by the COVID-19 pandemic, UiTM FC are confident in their preparations to start the 2021 Super League against Terengganu FC (TFC) at the UiTM Stadium, Shah Alam this Saturday.
The Lion's assistant head coach, Wan Mustafa Wan Ismail said the team have had pre-season friendlies in the form of the recent three-cornered Piala Bandaraya Shah Alam (PBSA 2021) competition.
"Our preparatory training are going on smoothly....We actually had an early start to this, which was around November and December last year. Our players are adequately prepared and are eagerly waiting for the opening of the 2021 Super League season.
“We have a good record against TFC throughout our participation in the Malaysian League, we even won against them last year with a 2-1 score. We hope our players will be able to maintain our record and momentum this time, especially on home ground.”
Wan Mustafa said this during the UiTM FC’s team launch event which was streamed live on YouTube today.
He said the Lions were indeed grateful to their head coach, Frank Bernhardt who had instilled German football culture into the team, which could incorporate various qualities and culture for football advancement.
“He brings in a new culture. As we know Germany is a former world champion and even has outstanding clubs such as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund," he added.
On the university team's lineup, Wan Mustafa said there were five import players in total including new goalie Dominic Picak from Croatia, Abu Bakar Al-Mel from Lebanon, Nana Poku from Ghana and Adam Michel Tull from the Philippines.
Victor Nirennold from France is also maintained as captain from last season.
"With regard to local players, we have eight who are also students of UiTM as well as four alumni," Wan Mustafa said.
UiTM created history last season when they qualified for the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Cup, but unfortunately, the competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
