KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 14 -- Former national coach B. Sathianathan has been appointed Premier League outfit Sarawak United’s technical director for two years, effective from January 2021.
He said that he agreed to the appointment after being impressed by Sarawak United president Datuk Posa Majais’ planning to ensure the team would qualify for the Super League in 2022 as well as the team’s programme to empower the development of their young players, including those from the Youth Cup (Under-19) and President’s Cup (Under-21).
“Their plan is to see Sarawak return to their glory days of the 1990s, when they won several titles in the Malaysia League (M-League),” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
Sarawak won the Premier League title in 1997 and 2013, the FA Cup in 1992 and the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Trophy in 1998.
He explained that E. Elavarasan would continue to be the head coach after being appointed last season.
The 62-year-old Sathianathan, who was adjudged the Best Coach at the National Football Awards in 2010, 2012 and 2017, said his biggest challenges would be to ensure the availability of the best facilities for the state’s football development programme and recruiting Sarawak-born players to return and play for the state.
Among his best achievements as a coach include guiding Kelantan to Malaysia Cup victory in 2010 and helping Armed Forces and Felda United emerge Premier League champions in 2012 and 2018 respectively.
