KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 -- Penang goalkeeper Samuel Somerville never expected his decision to join the Panthers this season would turn out to be the best move in his career, so far.
The player, who hails from Bracknell, England, not only captured the attention of head coach Manzoor Azwira to be fielded in all 11 Premier League matches, he also let in the fewest number of goals -- just eight -- in the second-tier of the Malaysia League (M-League).
“For me, this is a very meaningful achievement as there were several matches where I didn’t concede at all. But, most importantly, Penang won the Premier League. Another dream I have is to play in the top-tier Super League now that I've been here for several seasons.
“I may need a bit of time to get used to competing at that level, although I hope to continue playing at the highest level for a while more,” he said in a statement released by the Malaysian Football League (MFL).
Somerville, who gained Malaysian citizenship in 2015, was with Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT II) from 2016 to 2019, but was often the second choice behind Haziq Nadzli.
After helping Penang win their first Premier League title this season, the 26-year-old is determined to show off his goalkeeping skills in the Malaysia Cup competition scheduled to begin on Nov 6.
“We will try to go as far as we can and there’s no pressure on us, so long we respect the other teams, especially JDT, who I think are among the favourites,” he said.
