ALOR GAJAH, Oct 7 -- The Yang Dipertua Negeri of Melaka Tun Mohd Ali Rustam has been appointed as the third Chancellor of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).
UTeM in its statement today said the appointment, effective for four years from Aug 15, 2020, to June 3, 2024, was consented to by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
According to the statement, the appointment is to replace the previous UTeM Chancellor, namely the state’s former governor, Tun Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob.
"The appointment is in line with his (Mohd Ali) great contributions towards the development of the state of Melaka in various aspects, including turning the state into a world-famous tourist destination," added the statement.
Mohd Ali, born in Bukit Katil, Melaka on Aug 24, 1949, has a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Economic Development) degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia and a Master’s in Arts from the University of Malaya (2013).
He held the posts of Deputy Minister of Transport from 1995 to 1998 and Deputy Minister of Health from 1998 to 1999.
Mohd Ali also served as the ninth chief minister of Melaka from 1999-2013, and was appointed as the seventh Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka on June 4, 2020.
