KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 -- Nanyang Siang Pau's staff celebrating the daily's 97th anniversary on Monday were pleasantly surprised when the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agung Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah presented an anniversary cake for the occasion.
According to the daily’s report, its editor-in-chief Chan Aun Kuang and editorial staff expressed their sincere thanks and appreciation to Al-Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah for the royal gesture, the first for a Chinese daily in the country.
The daily also reported the head of Istana Negara's communications unit Muzli Mohd Zin and media relations officer Mohd Husni Yusop represented the King to deliver the royal gift.
"Sultan Abdullah has always shown his care and concern for members of the press and also values relations with the media," said Muzli.
He said, the king had decreed the establishment of a media communication unit, to maintain good interaction and engagement with members of the press.
Nanyang Siang Pau founded by philanthropist-entrepreneur Tan Kah Kee on Sept 6 1923 in Singapore, is one of oldest Chinese-language newspapers currently still in circulation in Malaysia.
