SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 – Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) is targetting to rake in RM15 million from the bidding of UiTM vehicle number plate series which was launched today.

Its board chairman, Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the proceeds would be channelled to the UiTM Endowment Fund in aid of students’ studies and teaching as well as research activities in the university.

He said collection from the bidding would also be an additional source of income for UiTM to ensure its survival and development of its campuses.

“Public universities in Malaysia are encouraged to raise additional funds as a source of income to support their teaching and infrastructure development needs.

“We also have a large network of alumni with over 700,000 people. So, of course, this special vehicle registration number plate will be well received,” he told reporters after launching the UiTMBida online bidding system at the Dewan Agung Tunku Canselor here today.

Also present was UiTM vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Ir Dr. Mohd Azraai Kassim and Road Transport Department (RTD) deputy director (licensing) Mohd Hafiz Shamsani Othman.

The ‘UiTMBida’ online platform is to ensure that the bidding process as well as the sale and purchase transactions, of the special vehicle registration number are safe for bidders.

The bidding will start today until 2023 and the special number plates will be available from number 10 to 9999.  Interested parties could place their bids via https://uitmbida.uitm.edu.my/.

Meanwhile, Mohd Azraai said the university obtained the approval from RTD to sell the UiTM special number plates on Dec 2019 in efforts to generate income as agreed in the Cabinet meeting two years ago.

“We do not want to miss the opportunity as this would help reduce our dependency on government grants,” he said adding that it is hoped that the RM15 million target would be met for the benefit of its students.
