KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 -- Two national men's back-up singles shuttlers -- Leong Jun Hao and Ng Tze Yong -- stole the show in Division One on the opening day of the 2020 Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Invitational Championships at the Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara today.

Jun Hao, the 2017 Asian junior champion who won Division Two last week, bounced back from a game down to beat former national player Liew Daren 15-21, 21-14, 21-16 in the match that lasted more than an hour.

“I expected a tough match, but I didn't think too much about my opponent. I just wanted to give my best in every match.

“My goal is to be in top four and this victory has certainly lifted my spirits as I head into the next match,” he said.

Tze Yong then put up a brilliant performance en route to defeating another former national player, Soong Joo Ven, 21-18, 21-12.

National men's singles ace Lee Zii Jia, however, showed his class when he put Division Two runner-up Lim Chong King to the sword by storming to a 21-14, 21-9 win.

Meanwhile, national mixed doubles pair Goh Soh Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai had to withdraw from the tournament after the former sustained a back muscle injury while playing against Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See.

Soon Huat-Shevon won the opening game 21-13 and were trailing 4-6 in the second when Soon Huat picked up the injury.

BAM organised the invitational meet, played behind closed doors and using the round-robin format, to ensure that the national shuttlers remained competitive following the cancellation of several international tournaments due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
