Gibs urged to withdraw use of UMK trademark

KOTA BHARU, June 2 -- Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) has urged Green Impiana Brothers Solution (GIBS) to withdraw the use of UMK trademark -- UMK logo and AcBioC -- for its product advertisements in the electronic and print media.

UMK Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof Dr Arham Abdullah said it had taken the action after GIBS breached the terms and conditions of the licensing agreement, including not settling the agreed payments.

“This is a breach of the first licensing agreement between UMK and the industry. In fact, UMK has issued three notices since March 10 regarding the matter but has yet to receive a response from GIBS,” he said at a press conference at the UMK City Campus in Pengkalan Chepa today.

He said that UMK and GIBS had signed a licensing agreement on March 19 2019 for the purpose of commercialising the R&D product of the AcBioC Biochar Organic Planting Mix brand as a licensed product and the agreement was terminated on March 10.

“With the termination of the agreement, GIBS is not allowed with immediate effect from selling, distributing and offering to sell, lease or import any licensed product using the AcBioC trademark from the date of termination. 

“However, UMK found that to date GIBS is still using UMK and AcBioC trademarks on its platforms for the purpose of product advertisement and commercialisation although the licensing agreement has been terminated,” he said.
