KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer (CEO) Nurini Kassim welcomed the appointment of Suhaimi Sulaiman as the agency’s new chairman, saying that she believed he will be able to provide strategic guidance to the agency in its transformation and efforts to stay relevant in the digital age.

“As we embark on our journey to transform Bernama into a converged and digital newsroom, I have no doubt that Suhaimi, in his new role as chairman, will be able to provide strategic guidance to the Board, management and indeed the whole of Bernama with fresh ideas to help in our transformation and for Bernama to stay relevant in this digital age,” she said in a statement, here today.

She said Suhaimi is no stranger to Bernama as apart from being a well-known TV personality, he had also helped turn Bernama Radio into a strong Malay-language business radio station targeting Small and Medium Enterprises and small businesses since September last year.

“He has likewise been instrumental in improving Bernama TV with a fresh new look and programming to be more aligned to news and current affairs, which underscores Bernama's mandate.

“Aside from his vast experience in media, broadcast and communications, Suhaimi also has strong corporate experience from his time at the Bank of Commerce, TV3 and until recently, as the CEO of Astro Awani,” she said.

Suhaimi’s appointment as the new chairman of the Bernama Board of Governors for a one-year term beginning Feb 1 this year, was announced by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, today.

He succeeds media personality Datuk Seri Azman Ujang whose tenure as Chairman ended on Jan 31.

In the statement, Nurini also expressed sincere thanks and appreciation to Azman for his contribution and guidance during his four years as Bernama chairman.

“Azman has served Bernama with commitment, dedication and enthusiasm for more than 36 years, ever since he started work as a reporter at the age 20 - we are all very grateful for his loyal and professional service to Bernama,” she said.
