Alexander Nanta Linggi heads Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry

KUCHING, March 9 -- Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, 62, the new Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister, is a Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Member of Parliament (MP) for Kapit, who has served the constituency for five terms since 1999.

His political career began in 1983 when he joined Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) and became the party’s Youth Wing Supreme Council member between 1983 and 1989, before becoming its Deputy Youth Chief from 1989 to 1998.

His first attempt to become an elected representative began during a state legislative assembly election for the Pelagus constituency in 1991 which he lost by a slim margin (642 votes) to incumbent Datuk Sng Chee Hua.

Alexander succeeded in becoming the Kapit MP during the 10th General Election (GE) in 1999 and defended the seat for the next four consecutive general elections.

He was appointed Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development in 2013, serving until May 2018.
