KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 -- Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein is no stranger to the country’s political scene and in three decades of his involvement in politics, the newly named Foreign Minister has held various ministerial portfolios in Cabinet.
The Sembrong Member of Parliament’s political journey began after he joined Sungai Mati UMNO branch in Johor in 1989 while his career in the Federal government started in 1995 when he was appointed the Ministry of International Trade and Industry parliamentary secretary.
Other posts he had held are Primary Industries deputy minister (1997), Youth and Sports Minister (1999), Education Minister (2004-2009) and Minister of Home Affairs (2009).
The former UMNO vice-president was the Defence Minister before Barisan Nasional was defeated in the 14th General Election. He, however, defended his Sembrong seat for the fourth term in a row, winning the seat with majority votes of 6,662.
Born on August 5, 1961 in Kuala Lumpur, Hishammuddin is married to Tengku Datin Seri Marsilla Tengku Abdullah and they have four children - Nasha Alyssa, Farris Hussein, Kyra Arianna and Fahd Hussein.
The son of the late Tun Hussein Onn, the 3rd Prime Minister, and the grandson of UMNO founder the late Datuk Onn Jaafar received his education at St. John Primary School in Kuala Lumpur, Malay College Kuala Kangsar and Cheltenham Boys College in the United Kingdom (UK).
Hishammuddin holds degrees from the University of Wales and London School of Economics, the United Kingdom.
