KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 -- The overall achievement of the 2019 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) nationwide announced today was better compared to the year before with the national average grade (GPN) at 4.86 compared to 4.89 in 2018.
GPN is the index used to show the achievement of candidates throughout the country in which a lower GPN indicates better performance.
IN KUALA LUMPUR, Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory (WPKL) Education director, Maznah Abu Bakar said the GPN for Federal Territory in 2019 was 4.86 points compared to the achievement of 4.80 points in 2018.
She said 14 schools scored 100 per cent in obtaining the SPM certificate in 2019 compared to 12 schools in 2018 while nine candidates obtained the highest results of (A+) in all subjects compared to 13 candidates in 2018.
Nonetheless, History saw a fall in the average subject grade (GPMP) by 0.19 at 5.02 points in 2019 compared to 4.83 points in 2018, she said at a media conference to announce the results of the 2019 SPM for WPKL here today.
IN NEGERI SEMBILAN, state Education director Datuk Pkharuddin Ghazali said the state once again maintained its second spot at national level in the 2019 SPM for four consecutive years.
“Negeri Sembilan GPN in 2019 rose 0.09 point to 4.58 in 2019 compared to 4.67 points in 2018,” he told a media conference to announce the 2019 SPM results of the state at Tunku Kurshiah College (KTK).
Pkharuddin said from 14,332 candidates in 116 schools, nine students from seven schools obtained A+ for all subjects sat while 498 candidates from 66 schools obtain grade A+, A and A- for all the subjects they took.
IN PERAK, a candidate in the special needs category, Oscar Wong Kinn Lap of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Methodist (ACS), Ipoh scored 10As.
State Education director Dr Mohd Suhaimi Mohamed Ali said Oscar was among 732 candidates who obtained As in all subjects sat in the state.
"GPN also improved to 4.91 from 5.01 points the year before and it was the best achievement in the last five years," he said.
IN JOHOR, state Education director Azman Adnan said 1,083 students achieved A +, A and A- in all subjects compared to 940 in 2018.
He said out of the total, 56 candidates scored all A+ results compared to 16 in 2018, with the Johor GPN in 2019 at 4.68 compared to 4.81 in 2018.
“An analysis of SPM achievements from 2012 to 2019 on Johor GPN, showed the state surpassed the national GPN for eight consecutive years,” he said when met at SMK Mutiara Rini.
IN SELANGOR, state Education director Dr Mahanom Mat Sam said 1,735 out of 54,093 candidates in the state achieved all As in all subjects and registered an increase in the achievement of excellent grades of 2.68 per cent in 2019 compared to 2.34 per cent in 2018.
The SPM 2019 results saw 54,627 candidates in the state eligible for the certificate compared to 54,093 students in 2018, while GPN improved by 0.03 point, with a score of 4.86 points compared to 4.89, he said when announcing the state’s SPM results in Shah Alam.
IN MELAKA, state Education director Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said 2019 SPM students who were eligible for the certificate rose to 89.1 per cent, compared with 87.8 per cent the previous year.
He said candidates who obtained all A+ and As also increased to 10 and 235 respectively last year, while two students achieved 11A+, six (10A+) and two (9A+) in all subjects.
"Melaka's GPN also improved by 0.13 point to 4.83 last year compared to 4.96 in 2018," he told a news conference at SMK Padang.
MEANWHILE TERENGGANU managed to set a new record of excellence in the SPM 2019 examination with a GPN of 4.69 over last year's record of 4.90.
Terengganu Education director Salim Ab Ghani said the number of students achieving As in all subjects increased to 293 in 2019 compared with 276 candidates the previous year.
IN KEDAH, 393 SPM candidates achieved grade A results in all subjects, which saw an increase of 15 students compared to the previous year, of which six achieved the highest grade, A+ in all subjects.
He said the SPM 2019 results in Kedah as a whole had improved with the state GPN improving to 5.02 compared to 5.05 in 2018.
IN KELANTAN, state Education director Abu Hanipah @ Fauzi Zahari said the state recorded a GPN of 4.84 points.
He said two candidates in the state scored A+ in all subjects and 252 candidates had at least A- for all subjects taken.
IN PAHANG, its Education director Datuk Dr Tajuddin Mohd Yunus said 265 or 1.53 per cent out of 17, 325 candidates in the state achieved straight As in SPM 2019.
He said the result was an increase of 0.19 per cent of excellent candidates including five candidates scoring A+ in all subject, compared to 238 with three straight A+ candidates in 2018.
IN PENANG, 644 candidates obtained straight As, however the number of excellent candidates dropped to 102, compared to the previous year, said its Education director Abdul Rashid Abdul Samad.
“On the overall, 15,451 out of 20,877 candidates or 84.51 per cent who sat for SPM last year, qualified for the certificate after passing Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, while the school average grade (GPS) for Penang is 4.86,” he said in a press conference at Sekolah Menengah Sains Tun Syed Sheh Shahabuddin (SMSTSSS), Bukit Mertajam.
He said 24 schools in the state recorded 100 per cent pass and 10 schools achieved top GPS including SMSTSSS.
He said six candidates with special needs obtained excellent results, among B. Kosini, of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Convent Green Lane, who has visual disability obtained 2A+, 3A and 4A- and disabled student, Nurul Felina Zaidi of SMK Bukit Jambul scored 4A, 3A- dan 2B+.
IN PERLIS, state Education director, Izmi Ismail said 83.39 per cent of the candidates who sat for the SPM were eligible to obtain certificates compared to 85.19 per cent the year before and Perlis also saw an improvement in its GPN from 5.19 in 2018 to 5.18 in 2019.
Forty three students (1.31 per cent) out of 3,200 candidates who sat for SPM obtained grade A (A+, A and A-) in all the subject they took compared to 41 (1.25 per cent) in the previous year, he said.
IN LABUAN, 871 out of 964 candidates who sat for the SPM obtained certificates compared to 840 in 2018.
Labuan Education director, Raisin Saidin said the GPN was 5.12 compared to 4.98 in 2018, with 12 students who obtained at least an A- for all the subjects they took.
