BUKIT MERTAJAM, Jan 7 -- Police arrested a chief executive officer (CEO) of a gold trading company and his driver on Sunday for making a false police report claiming more than RM1 million in cash and jewellery was robbed from them in an incident at Bandar Perda, here.

Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the 26-year-old man and his 30-year-old driver claimed they were robbed by a man in front of a petrol station at 3.50 pm on Saturday.

"In the police report, the CEO claimed that he and the driver left a goldsmith shop in Bandar Perda after completing a business transaction in a car before stopping at a gas station to buy some water.

"The man said he was in the car while the driver went out to buy water before a man allegedly got into the car through the rear door and grabbed a bag containing cash and jewellery before fleeing on a motorcycle," he said in a statement here today.

He said the man claimed the bag contained RM418,000 in cash and various jewellery worth more than RM600,000.

Nik Ros Azhan said further investigations found that the CEO who ran a company in Batu Pahat, Johor, had conspired with his driver and two other individuals to stage a robbery in order to make insurance claims.

"Based on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras located at the petrol station, indeed there was a robbery incident which took place, but police investigations found that it was deliberately staged to be recorded on CCTV, to convince the police that their story is true," he said.

He said further investigations found that the “stolen” bag which was said to have contained various jewellery weighing 2,864.99 grams, as well as money, was dumped in a nearby drain.

He said police later arrested two other men aged 51 and 23 for their alleged involvement in the fake robbery.

"The four men have been remanded for six days to assist in the investigation under Section 182 of the Penal Code, and could face up to a six-month jail sentence, or RM2,000 fine, or both, if convicted," he said.
