KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 8 -- Malaysian digital animation pioneer Kamaruddin Ismail, 63, died at 4.15pm at the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Petaling Jaya here today of a heart attack.
President of the Animation Society of Malaysia (Animas) Amir Hamzah Hashim, in a statement issued this afternoon, said the late Kamn Ismail as he was fondly known was a leading figure in the use of computer technology and digital applications in the 90’s through the production of animation series ‘Usop Sontorian’.
In 1997 he produced and released the television series ‘Keluang Man’ which was broadcast on TV1 (Radio Television Malaysia) through 2D and 3D hybrid animation.
His animation was awarded FFM Best Animated Movie 2004 and 2005 through the animation of ‘Kumang Legenda Sarawak’ and ‘Legenda Kinabalu’ respectively.
On April 1, the Malaysian Cartoon and Comic House along with Animas nominated him as Malaysian Animation Icon on Cartoonist Day awards night at the National Museum.
Amir Hamzah when contacted by Bernama described Kamn Ismail as a person committed to the production of animation series.
"I started working with him since 1994. He was an avid storyteller and would try to put together excellent animation. Despite the many copycats, he never gave up.
"He had always told us to believe that ‘what is meant for you is meant for you’ and that I remember to this day," he said.
