TAIPING, Sept 29 -- Sekolah Kebangsaan King Edward VII (1) Old Students Alumni has called on the Ministry of Education to repair the school's original building at Jalan Stesen here to prevent pupils from getting hurt in old school building.
According to its president, Mohaideen Ishak, 79, the building, which housed one of the first premier schools to be established in the country, was built in 1883.
It was then known as Central School, and the name was changed to King Edward VII in conjunction with the coronation of King Edward VII in England.
He said the association had requested for an allocation from the government to repair the two-storey building and had met Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik a few times over the matter.
The building has been gazetted as a heritage building and we want it repaired without changing the original structure, he said when met here today.
He estimated repairs on the building could cost about RM10 million.
Mohaideen said the school building served as the headquarters for the Japanese secret service, the Malayan Kempeitai, during the Japanese Occupation.
The school has produced many eminent personalities in the country, including statesmen and in various fields, including education, sports and the corporate sector.
They included the first president of Singapore, Yusof Ishak, first Perak Menteri Besar Tan Sri Mohamed Ghazali Jawi, former Malaysian Armed Forces chief Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ghazali Che Mat, former Chief Secretary to the Government Tun Abdullah Ayub, former Trade Minister Tan Sri Dr Lim Swee Aun, Media Prima Group chairman Datuk Abdul Mutalib Razak and Albukhary Foundation education adviser Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Shukor Abdullah.
Others included former National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairman Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin, football coach Datuk M. Karathu, national athlete M. Dataya and Kulim-Bandar Baharu Member of Parliament Zulkifli Noordin.
Among the royalties who are alumni of the school are the former Perak sultans, such as the late Sultan Iskandar Shah and the late Sultan Abdul Aziz, and also the late Raja Kamarulzaman Raja Mansor, who was the Raja DiHilir Perak
