SERDANG, Sept 4 -- Public transport should be the transportation of choice for undergraduates of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) because it is the safest mode of transport compared to the risks of accidents involving private vehicles, said Executive Director of Safe Kids Malaysia Professor Madya Dr K.C.M Kulanthayan.
In a briefing on Road Safety Empowerment to 4,000 new undergraduates who registered at the UPM for the 2019/2020 session here today, he shared last year’s death statistics recorded by the nation where 64.5 per cent involved motorcycles, cars (18 per cent), pedestrians (six per cent), bus 0.3 per cent and others 11.47 per cent.
Based on the statistics, Kulanthayan from the Community Health Department, Faculty of Medical Health Science UPM. said public transport was found to be safer compared to any private transport.
"Even in terms of science, when we sit in any large vehicle, our risks are less compared to when we sit in smaller vehicles,” he told the media after the briefing.
He said UPM had also introduced its bus service for students.
