LANGKAWI, July 17 (Bernama) -- Five visitors of the Langkawi SkyCab experienced a temporary shock when the two gondolas they were travelling in came to a standstill near Tower 1 of the tourist destination on the resort island here this morning.
The incident occurred following a small fire at the base station causing the cable car system connecting the Oriental Village at Teluk Burau with the 713-metre Gunung Mat Chinchang to be halted, and the visitors were left stranded about 38m above sea level.
The emergency situation was handled by various rescue agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, the police, Malaysian Civil Defence Force (MCDF) and Sultanah Maliha Hospital, Langkawi.
The scene was part of two-hour search and rescue exercise to test the level of preparedness and efficiency of rescue agencies and their cooperation with the staff of Panorama Langkawi Sdn Bhd (PLSB).
According to PLSB board member Mohd Asri Redha Abdul Rahman, the simulation exercise involving 300 participants comprised PLSB staff and search and rescue personnel to ensure the safety of cable car operations as it involved high altitudes.
Also present were Kedah Fire and Rescue operations centre chief Supt Zamani Ismail, Langkawi District Police chief Supt Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim and PLSB acting chief operating officer Abu Hashim Abd Rahman.
