KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- The National Sports Council (NSC) has agreed to allow national karate champion Syakilla Salni Jefry Krisnan to train under former national chief coach, Andre Vasiljevs.
NSC director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail said the decision was arrived at after a discussion with Syakilla and Vasiljevs on Sunday.
‘’I have discussed with both of them yesterday and the decision arrived at was mutually agreed upon. Andre will handle Syakilla’s programme to contest in the 55 kg event at the SEA Games Philippines and the Tokyo Olympic Games qualification.
‘’Syakilla has missed the first qualification process to the Olympic Games due to her weight problem. So, the focus now is on the qualification in September,’’ he said after chairing the Work Committee Meeting with athletics sports at the NSC today.
Ahmad Shapawi said Vasiljevs would coach Syakilla in Selangor and his contract would be discussed later.
NSC, prior to this, rejected Syakilla’s request to train in Latvia, in fact, giving until September for the karate champion to reduce her weight to 55 kg to hunt for qualification points to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The former world’s leading karate athlete in the 55 kg kumite event had missed many championships since experiencing weight problem from last year.
