SEJONG (South Korea), May 15 (Bernama) -- South Korea will seek ways to boost the bio-health industry as a key pillar of Asia's fourth-largest economy, Yonhap news agency reported, quoting the country's chief economic policymaker Wednesday.

Hong Nam Ki, the minister of economy and finance, said the government will soon unveil a set of comprehensive measures that focus on research and development and deregulation.

"If we capitalise on our ICT and excellent medical professionals and hospitals, we can nurture bio-health industry as a key industry, like semiconductors," Hong said in a meeting with officials in Seoul.

Semiconductors are a key export product in South Korea, home to Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chip maker, and its smaller rival, SK Hynix.

In April, South Korea said it will invest nearly 3 trillion won (US$2.6 billion) this year into biotech-related research and development and commercialisation efforts.
