KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) – National swimmer, Welson Sim proves his four-month training stint in Melbourne, Australia was fruitful when he splashed to his second gold medal at the Malaysian Open swimming championships in the National Aquatic Centre, Bukit Jalil today.
He clocked 49.54 seconds in the 100 meter freestyle heat to set a new meet record at swimming championships and erased the previous record of 50.16s by Indian swimmer, Virdhawal Khade in 2012.
The Sarawakian who swam in Heat 1, also broke his own national record of 49.98s in the preliminary round but clocked a time of 49.83s in the final.
“I still happy with my time although it is 0.29s slower than my time during the heat. I am happy with my achievement today.
"Actually 49 seconds is one of the short term goal that we (with the coach from Melbourne) had achieved today," he said.
Keith Lim Kit Sern took the silver in 51.03s while Indian swimmer Roy Neel clocked 51.17s to win the bronze medal.
Welson achieved his first sub-50 seconds race with a time of 49.98 seconds in the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide.
Welson decided to pull out from the 800m freestyle event today due to tiredness and will focus on 200m freestyle event tomorrow.
Sajan Prakash of India took the gold medal in the event in 8:12.11s, while Sebastian Soon of Federal Territories won the silver in 8:22.35s and Low Zheng Yong of Melaka bagged the bronze medal in 8:35.05s.
