Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah wins inaugural Putrajaya Wind Orchestra Contest

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- With its spellbinding performance, Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SAS) of Putrajaya captivated both judges and audience to emerge as the champion of Putrajaya Wind Orchestra 2019 competition held at Cempaka Sari Auditorium here today.

In the event which was attended by Prime Minister's wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, SAS presented two pieces, Symphonic Dance No 3 Fiesta and Jong Jong Inai to beat four other schools and took home a cash prize of RM5,000, a revolving trophy, a trophy and participation certificates.

The orchestra of Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Ipoh played Diogenes and Seringgit Dua Kupang, to take the second place and won RM3,000 cash prize with a trophy and participation certificates. 

Sekolah Menengah Sains Selangor, Kuala Lumpur was placed third with their rendition of  “To Challenge The Sky and Heavens Above” and Overture Kuala Lumpur, and took home RM1,500 with a trophy and participation certificates.

Two other competing schools are Kolej Melayu Kuala Kangsar and Sekolah Menengah (Perempuan) St. George, Penang.

Dr Siti Hasmah in her short speech at the inaugural competition said she was amazed by the energetic performances of the orchestras.

“I did not expect to see such a thoroughly entertaining show. The performances really touched my heart,” she said.

Meanwhile Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) president Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim said the competition organised by Education Ministry was inspired by Dr Siti Hasmah who wished to see more forms of music events in Putrajaya.

“Through this contest, PPj hopes to unearth talents to the local music scene by featuring such creative musicians.

He said PPj also hoped the competition would be made as an annual event and expanded to international level.
