KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Rugby Union (MRU) has been fined US$10,000 (about RM41,095) for not participating in the Asia Rugby Under-19 Championship Division 1 in Bangkok, Thailand in December.
MRU president Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya in confirming the matter said the union had submitted two appeals to Asia Rugby recently after the governing body reduced the fine to US$9,000 upon the first appeal at the end of last year.
Shahrul said MRU did not send the national junior team to the championship which costs RM80,000 due to financial constraints in the last quarter of the 2018 and was late in getting a sponsorship approval from a corporate company.
“We also face financial problems as our claims with the National Sports Council (MSN) are still outstanding...We understand they are also facing financial constraints too and we appreciate their efforts all this while.
“Our place was taken by China and this is a meaningful lesson for us as the players who have been trained could not compete in the tournament,” he told reporters after a Malaysia Rugby League team managers’ meeting at Wisma OCM today.
