LANGKAWI, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- Frangipani Langkawi Resort and Spa together with Langkawi Business Association (Niagakawi) launched a Food Waste Champion group today in the effort to reduce food waste disposal at the island’s landfill.
The initiative, which was endorsed and launched by the Kedah Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) director, Zaidi Tuah, also involved eight other hotels and restaurants here.
Frangipani Langkawi’s group managing director Anthony Wong said through this group, they planned to collect up to 200 kg of food waste from the participating premises daily, which would then be made as feeding source for a Black Soldier Flies (BSF) project at the resort.
“We are made to understand that between 80 tonnes and 200 tonnes of waste were generated in Langkawi and the figure would rise even higher during the peak season. Out of that about 45 per cent is food waste,” he told a press conference after the launching ceremony.
Apart from reducing almost half of the estimated waste dumped at the landfill daily, he said the initiative would benefit the BSF project, another environmental-friendly effort undertaken by the resort for the production of agricultural compost.
