GEORGE TOWN, Nov 2 (Bernama) – Motorcyclists in Penang will be rejoicing as come next year there will be no more tolls for them for using the two bridges linking the mainland and the island.
When tabling the 2019 Budget in the Dewan Rakyat today, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng announced that toll for motorcyclists plying the Penang Bridge and Sultan Abdul Halim Muázam Shah Bridge as well as the Linkedua in Johor would be abolished from Jan 1, 2019.
A frequent user, Mohd Fazil Othman, 32, who does despatch work, hailed the budget this time saying the government understood the plight the people from the lower income group were facing.
“Now I will have more money to spend,” he told Bernama.
Mohd Hafiz Mat Shariff, 31, a private sector employee, concurred saying he now need not worry about toll because all he would have to do was just fill up petrol.
The toll rate (for motorcyclists) on the Penang Bridge is RM1.20 and on the Sultan Abdul Halim Muázam Shah Bridge RM1.70.
In JOHOR BAHRU, Ken Choo, 44, who lives in Bukit Indah here and has been travelling daily to Jurong in Singapore for work via the Linkedua the last 10 years, said he would be saving more than RM50 a month on toll from Jan 1,
According to Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Rohaizi Bahari, on average 40,000 motorcyclista use the Linkedua each day.
