KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 (Bernama) – Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and the Terengganu state government yesterday signed two collaboration agreements, one over the Hulu Terengganu hydroelectric project and another for the construction of Terengganu TNB’s new headquarters.
In a statement today, TNB said the first agreement is over royalty for water usage and licence payments for the Puah and Tembat dams, while the second one is for the construction of a new Terengganu TNB headquarters near Wisma Darul Iman on 9,581 sq. m. of land.
The agreements were signed by TNB President/CEO Datuk Seri Ir. Azman Mohd and Terengganu State Secretary Datuk A. Rahman Yahya, witnessed by Deputy State Secretary (Development) Rosman Roslan and TNB Company Secretary Norazni Mohd Isa. Also in attendance was Menteri Besar, Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
The Hulu Terengganu hydroelectric scheme, comprising two lakes covering 7,197 hectares or one-sixth of Kenyir Lake, began operations in December 2015.
The Puah and Tembat dams have played an important role during major floods, especially those that hit the state in 2014.
TNB said the dams contained a large volume of water from the continuous heavy rains and mitigated flood damage.
In his speech, Azman said the dams prevented losses estimated at about RM6.4 million in damage to residents’ property and Drainage and Irrigation Department infrastructure in Kuala Berang.
Azman also suggested the setting up of a management committee for Hulu Terengganu’s lakes and watershed areas.
TNB said the Kenyir dam generates 400 megawatts (MW) while the Puah and Tebat dams generate 265 MW, contributing some 26 per cent to Peninsular Malaysia’s hydroelectric capacity of 2,536 MW.
It added that the new customer- and environmentally-friendly headquarters, expected to be completed in three years, can accommodate 500 staff, and is set to be a new landmark in Kuala Terengganu City Centre.
