KUCHING, Oct 9 (Bernama) – The Sarawak Deaf Sports Association (SSDeaf) is to send a contingent of 80 athletes, 23 officials and 15 supportive members to the 20th ‘Sukan Orang Pekak Malaysia’ (20th SOPMA Games) in Ipoh from Oct 15 to 20.
Minister of Welfare, Community Well-Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said Sarawak will participate in three out of five sports, namely athletics, badminton and ten-pin bowling, in the biennial games. The two other sports are football and futsal.
"At SOPMA Perak 2018, Sarawak aims for eight gold medals to stay among the top three teams in the overall medal tally," she said at the handing over of the state flag to the contingent here today.
Sarawak was ranked third with six gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals in SOPMA Sarawak 2016, the best achievement by the state thus far.
The 20th SOPMA Games are organised by the Malaysian Deaf Sports Association (MSDeaf) with the support of the Perak government, Youth and Sports Ministry and several federal agencies.
