Authorities detain 84 Indonesian illegal immigrants in Tawau

TAWAU, Oct 6 (Bernama) --- A total of 84 Indonesian illegal immigrants (Pati) were detained in a raid by the Marine Police (PPM) in collaboration with General Operations Force and the Immigration Department during the Op Inter-Agency raid here yesterday.

Tawau PPM commander, DSP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim, said the illegal immigrants were among 150 individuals questioned at three locations namely the coastal area of Pulau Sidam and Sungai Simandalan of Wallace Bay, and the water village of Kampung Hidayat Batu 4 between 7 am and 11 pm.

“The immigrants, consisting of 43 men, 28 women and 13 children were detained for various offences including under Section 6 (1) (c) Immigration Act 1959/63, the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, and the Fisheries Act 1985,” he said in a statement here today.

Mohd Nazri said the operation was carried out in two phases, the first involving raids on seaweed cultivation area in Pulau Sidam and squatter houses near Sungai Simandalan, while the second was at Kampung Air Hidayat Batu 4.

He added such collaboration would be continued in the future to tackle crime including human trafficking and smuggling in the district.
